Winter Storm Warning

You know all of those alerts you get as you watch TV that tell you to not go out in the blizzard... why must the University of Wisconsin-Madison never be on the list for school closings. Is it too much to ask for us college students to get that childhood dream as well? In high school, I got one snow day, and it was glorious. The year after I graduated, they got one snow day and two cold days. This year, they have already racked up 2 snow days and a cold day. The reason this upsets me is that for them to get to school, they have to get to a single building, and stay there for the rest of the day. As a college student, we have 15 minutes to get from one building to the next, usually completely across campus. I'm not arguing that we shouldn't allow the high schools to close for the day, but for the university to cut us a little slack. Don't just cancel classes after 3:30, when most of the storm has passed. I lost count of the number of cars I saw stuck in the middle of the road and the number of people that wiped out on my way to class. It is funny at first... but who can honestly say they haven't slipped yet. So come on chancellor, let us college kids have that childhood dream back.

please?

No kidding! It honestly wasn't even safe! I was upset that not only did all the high schools have a snow day, but every other college campus in the area did as well! Businesses even closed. We should have had the day off.

Any time when they say you could get frost bite on any exposed areas if outside for longer than 15 mins, classes should be canceled. It takes longer than that to make it across campus. So what do they propose, we wear goggles on our walk. It isn't safe and we can't rely on the bus system either. They were all running extremely late, if they were even running at all.

It was pretty terrible trying to go down Bascom. The line on the Langdon side trying to get down the stairs stretched all the way up to the Education building!

I agree, it was way too cold and way too dangerous for everyone to be out like that. I helped 2 cars get un-stuck and saw at least 2 people a day fall down on the icy sidewalks.

From what I hear, this is all thanks to a law student who sued the school for cancelling classes one day. He argued that by cancelling class, the school was stealing his money and denying him the education he paid for with his semester tuition. But come on, one frivolous lawsuit or dozens of people with frostbite and broken hips?

I had no idea about the law student thing. I would have just skipped classes that day, but I just couldn't handle missing english 102, i just love it too much (or attendance is required for all of my classes that day)

I agree completely! I had no idea about the law student, but how many people honestly feel that way when it is that cold outside? I thought majority was supposed to rule! Last year I read in one of the student papers that it has to be negative 60 degrees with the windchill for classes to be cancelled. Who knows if that is really true or not. I also love how classes were cancelled AFTER the snow had stopped. O and let's send the e-mail at 3:15 to cancel the 3:30 classes. Most people have to leave before then to make it to class on time!
